finally made it back, after being told 11.30am depart, then 12.30, then absolutly no way until after 3 went back to the lounge to be told 10 mins later boarding..oh the joys of it all…..

Just a thought – how many hours after the scheduled arrival time, did you actually arrive in CAN?
You may wish to have a look at EU261/2004, for long delays are now compensated in the same way as cancellations.
No great help, but 600€ (if applicable) would be worth trousering.
DoS, was 8 hrs late into CAN going out and 9 hrs late returning back to NIA
Have a look for the outbound then, sounds as if the return was probably ‘extra-ordinary’ circumstances.
You may be in for 600€.
