What was once Europe’s leading ‘open skies’ airport has certainly changed over the years.

Previously we had reported that Schiphol’s capacity cap was now extended to September 2024 (yes 2024 is correct) and now the airport (majority owned by the Netherlands government) to ban night flights.

The night curfew is stricter than that of LHR which does allow a very limited number of early morning arrivals.

    KLM is not happy. [NL]

The reason is because, as readers know, KLM is a sixth-freedom airline so connectivity is vital.

KLM’s early morning long-haul arrivals which feed its shorter flights will be impacted.

KLM disagrees with unilateral decision of Amsterdam Schiphol management and will propose alternatives

Under the proposal, all commercial flights and cargo flights scheduled to depart between midnight and 6am would be halted as well as those landing between midnight and 5am.

These changes would mostly affect Air France/KLM subsidiary Transavia, which by my count has 6 arrivals after midnight today, and many pre midnight arrivals which are delayed to arrive after midnight, mostly from leisure destinations in Spain/Turkey. Like Heathrow, one assumes the use of alternate airports for more point to point leisure routes could be the solution, checking nearby airports Rotterdam/Eindhoven, they don’t have any arrivals after midnight, by design or due to local restrictions I’m not sure. Mainline KLM and Delta (which is part of the complaint to the Dutch Government) at first glance wouldn’t be disrupted by the new rules, KLM’s first arrival is at 5.20am (from Incheon) and Delta at 5.40am (from Detroit).

Just reported by Bloomberg; Schiphol Airport’s flight capacity cap for the coming season can’t go ahead, a local court ruled. The Dutch government didn’t follow the correct procedure for a temporary arrangement to limit flights to 460,000 flights at the Amsterdam airport, a district court of Noord-Holland ruled on Wednesday.

AndrewinHK – With early morning long-haul arrivals the point is that they can arrive early.

This especially applies to those flights arriving from NE Asia (at least in the days when they crossed Russia) could arrive up to one hour earlier depending on weather conditions en route.

I know some flights were allowed to arrive early, but this doesn’t apply to all, many a time I’ve flown CX from HK to AMS and the aircraft was held in HK due to the curfew. I don’t believe any passenger flights are scheduled pre 5am, so KLM/Delta etc can just be held at departure points, the new rules don’t really affect aircraft utilisation, although I imagine on some days it will result in holding stacks prior to landing like the LHR 6am rush, not exactly environmentally friendly.

One can only hope that LGW and MAN adopt this as well. The imposition of night flights on the local communities is nothing short of illegal by these two airport companies.
Well done Schiphol….thank you. There used to be a “Jetban” at LGW similar to that in existence at LHR, but over the years it’s been quietly ignored, and the government does nothing about it….!

It had been thought the airlines had won.

But today the Amsterdam Court of Appeal has overturned the decision. So the shrinkage at Schiphol can continue.

It means Schiphol’s flight movements will be capped at 460,000 (down from 500,000).

However KLM and Schiphol require more clarity on how to proceed.

This is breaking news and has not yet been reported by UK media.
