Cathay Pacific’s now profitable low cost arm HK Express is expanding fast and will grow capacity to 170% of pre pandemic levels by year end.

HK Express CEO Jeanette Mao said yesterday that the airline is continually expanding its Airbus fleet to 40 this year and to 60 by end 2028.
This will allow the airline to expand the number of destinations from the current 24 to 30 by the end of 2024 and ultimately to around 60 adding flights also to more distant destinations.

Currently many of its destinations are in Northeast Asia – such as Japan, Korea and Taiwan – accounting for 70 per cent of total flights while Southeast Asia accounts for around 25 per cent, with the remaining 5 per cent to mainland China,” she said on yesterday.
“We expect in the next two years, our number of flights to mainland China can increase from 5 per cent to maybe 10 per cent of the total network.”.

Mao added “unlike Cathay Pacific, HK Express did not have any post pandemic staffing issues but the company would hire an additional 500 aircrew to cope with its expansion this year, bringing the number to more than 1,200, Mao said. “We recruit not only in Hong Kong, we are also actively recruiting overseas. For cabin crew, we recruit also in Japan, Korea, Thailand and Malaysia.

Cathays HK Express is Hong Kong’s only low cost airline and fares are cheap. Checking today for April flights I found HKG- Bangkok at HK$878-Tokyo $1664- Seoul $1455 and Manila at under HK$1000 return.

I have used the airline and for a LCC it works well enough with newish aircraft, decent seats with extra leg room seats and advance seat selection available.

HK Express is really taking off! 😄 They’re on a roll with that expansion plan, doubling down on their fleet and destinations. With more aircrew coming onboard, they’re set to soar even higher. Plus, those ticket prices are a steal! Can’t beat affordable fares and decent service.
