I believe that Jet2 have done this before from Leeds Bradford airport, but they’ve just announced that there will be two special flights from Newcastle to New York this coming Christmas, as well as from LBA. Flights from both airports will operate:

    2nd December returning 5th December 2010

    9th December returning 12th December 2010

The flights are being sold through the company’s Jet2 Holidays operation:

Although these particular services are themselves fairly irrelevant to business travellers, they do bring to mind the planned American service from NCL to JFK, which never actually made it from schedule to reality.

With Emirates reporting a 20% uplift in passenger numbers NCL-DXB vv in the first three months of the year (21,000 vs 17,000 last year), and the abandonment of R3 at Heathrow, it does throw the development of direct longhaul routes from regional airports into sharp focus once again.

Not all that sure that I fancy Jet2 pitch for 8 hours though!

I wonder if this is a kind of replacement for the FlyGlobespan service which operated from Doncaster then MAN to NYC.
