I should be going to Abidjan in a couple of months. Never been there before so I wonder what kind of security measures I should require. In Lagos, for instance, I am asking for an escort from and to the airport and a secured hotel. What should I ask in Abidjan?
Thanks.
You should be ok in Abidjan though exercise vigilance. Most of the attacks are against the police and military but there is some risk of danger to westerners after Ivory Coasts intervention in Mali. Most of the attacks when they take place happen at night.
There is also still a very high incidence of crime, from theft to muggings so be careful but you should be ok in the major hotels.
The DFAE as well as the FCO have up to date info and I’d also recommend you letting the Embassy know you’re there and your whereabouts.
Thanks, LP. I am actually using Itineris (https://www.itineris.eda.admin.ch/ and follow the FCO as well as its French counterpart. But these guys are often only giving clues when it comes to specific measures such as an escort…
Thanks for the link Swissdiver. I’d not come across Itineris before and have now registered. It seems a very useful service and it’s good to see the Swiss looking after her citizens. I wonder if other countries have a similar service?
I know France has “Ariane” which I presume offers the same service. And I presume something similar exists in the UK and US…
