LP might be offering free guides, but you might wish to purchase a flask of Sifta Sam salt to go with them. They are so often outdated, inaccurate and unreliable that those of us who spend a fair amount of our time in the more colourful parts of the world, and refer on occasion to Mr. Wheeler’s progeny, have come to refer to Lonely Planet as Looney Planet.

To be fair, however, they are less out of touch with reality than the bizarre musings of the South America Handbook, which bear about as close a relationship to reality as Chatwyn’s “In Patagonia”, a source of much amusement to the people of Rio Negro and beyond.

Persons of Business Traveller status would be well advised to refer to Fodor guidebooks, not least for their coverage of the US.
