Indeed they are using different growth strategy, and it is paying off.
As, you mention, shares in other Airlines.
A 10 year agreement with KLM/ AF which will include reciprocal FFP benefits, in every aspect, and start flying into AMS in May.
They have built an $8 Mil. lounge at CDG, quite an investment.
AF / KLM will link their passengers onto around Europe, and visa versa, routes to Australia will be available from Europe via AUH.
It seems a Skyteam join is on the cards, but either way the equated benefits of each Airline will be enabled . Virgin also will be in the queue for Skyteam, and this matches stakes in Virgin Australia, and Delta in Virgin Atlantic. Garuda will be in Skyteam next year, so much to celebrate with great enhancements on the way, a large part from Etihad.
A very different strategy to Emirates, that confront and compete, Etihad have decided to co-operate and work with other Airlines, as well as take investments in them, and it works!
They are an excellent Airline, have flown with them since their first year.7 Feb 2013
