AMcWhirterParticipantAs many of you will know Berlin’s long-haul network is sparse.
National airline Lufthansa does not operate international flights from Germany’s capital.
So the news that Easyjet will be operating a twice weekly service to Cairo from December 17 will be welcomed by Berliners.
Timings are civilised. Flights operate on Wednesday and Sunday.
Berlin depart 1140 arriving Cairo 1645 and returning from Cairo at 1730 to reach Berlin at 2055.
Return fares vary but in January, at time of writing, a return flight could cost around £200-£250 or even less.
This route is currently served by Egyptair.
Berlin-Cairo follows soon after Easyjet starts its first London-Cairo service which we reported last month.

transtraxmanParticipantI vaguely remember when BA founded “Go Fly” back in 1998. The CEO was Barbara Cassani and she led the airline to a successful launch, a management buy-out, and then an agreed take over by Easyjet. If I am correct she said that you …”choose your destinations, the starting points and then just join up the dots”.
Of course, it is quite logical to start flights to a new destination —– such as Cairo from London Luton —– then add other routes from Berlin, to be followed by routes from other European bases to Cairo.
Which immediate starting points are likely? Paris Orly, Milan Malpensa, Rome, Geneva, Amsterdam, Athens ??? A lot will depend on the existing competition from other airlines. However, it must be remembered that the cost of setting up a new route is minimal as the baggage handlers, check-in staff, and other ground staff, have already been contracted for work. We are just increasing their work load (within the legal, established limits). Thus expect more flights to this destination.

AMcWhirterParticipantAlso note that Egypt will doubtless be providing EZY with ‘help’ as it wants to rebuild its tourist industry.
