If you have the chance to stay overnight, try the hotels on Coloane – the southernmost part of the territory and roughly a million miles away from the busy-ness, crowds and casinos of Macau itself. Very quiet, good beaches, good Portuguese food (and cheap wine – well cheaper than HK).

There is a Westin which is like any Westin, but the better bet is the Pousada de Coloane which has recently been refurbished. In the 1990s it used to make Fawlty Towers look efficient but it is better now and extremely peaceful.

On the other hand, if you want to try something different, why not stay on Lamma Island in HK? Once the day trippers leave it is delightfully quiet and different.
