Regular visitors to Copenhagen will be familiar with the klippekort. One clip buys a journey, how far and for how much time depends on the number of zones purchased. A three-zone klippekort costs about the same as a taxi to the city centre from Kastrup, but will get you to your hotel, and back, and also buy eight single journeys around a large area of the city – good value and very easy to understand and to use.

However, back in December, it was announced that the klippekort would be withdrawn. We are now supposed to buy a rejsekort, very similar in function to an Oyster card. However, this has been a disaster. Danish friends have abandoned attempts to buy a rejsekort: I spent nearly an hour in all at the central station yesterday at the rejsekort window in the ticket office, and failed to get one. (The forms are complicated, even if you read Danish, and have stuff about how all the infornation is needed under money-laundering laws, which seems far-fetched.)

The good news is that it was announced two days ago that the klippekort will live on, for the time being at least.

The whole thing has been a very non-Danish piece of inefficiency. Why it cannot be as easy as buying an Oyster card I really do not know.

So, while you can, buy that three-zoner (use your credit card in the machines on the metro station platform) and enjoy the delights of Copenhagen’s wonderful public transport.
