I see that the retirement age for pilots in the USA is to be raised to 67 from 65.
To me this seems reasonable to me but others may believe not?

Some years ago I had a friend then aged 76 who gained the endorsement on his Australian licence to fly small jets. We have not been in touch for some time but he was still flying at plus 80.

Why not if they can pass they checks and medicals – everyone is different so I guess it just needs monitoring

Totally agree if they can pass the fitness and all medical checks.

I also agree it’s definitely okay if they pass all the cheks. I have a pilot friend and he loves his job, so I think that’s good for most pilots.

As well as passing whatever medical tests that are required, these pilots bring a vast amount of experience and wisdom which can only be of benefit to the Airlines and to the less experienced pilots.

A great move, in my opinion.

They also work as pairs, so why not?

And yet Many Airlines, Pull away many female Cabin crew of a certain age, who they do not consider any longer having The “Right look”, onto ground duties?!!
I certainly know the GC’s do, MH, SQ, TG,yet the males can carry on far longer!

I have a colleague who carries out the annual Medicals and is a Specialist Aviation Qualified Consultant in Australia.
He has experienced many more of both Pilots and Crew going for retirement on Medical grounds, both Physical and Mental Health grounds now!

He finds that certainly the demands on both operational duties, have been increased both pre- and post Covid, with denser schedules and more demands coming for all roles, in most Airlines. Let us hope the pressure with the good recovery, lessens for a good balance again.

There is nothing more pleasurable than seeing and engaging with experienced, knowledgeable, and very confident crew.

Let alone in all our highly regarded UK trained Professions, Legal, Medical, Nursing, Teaching, Engineering… they should be allowed to work as long as fit to, and willing!

Interesting thread and would agree if it were a multi pilot flight deck.

However, after watching a film and researching the event of King-air N559DW perhaps it may not be a good idea for single crew operations to rely solely on the results of a medical and have age disregarded.
