According to reports Cathay is needing to cancel a small number of flights due to pilot illness. It seems that the situation was also aggravated by some pilots on stand-by unknowingly having reached their annual allowed flight hours.

The worst day it seems was the 30th when 14 flights were cancelled – almost all to AU or China. Many are aware that the airline is ‘tight’ on pilot numbers although some 1500 were recruited or re-employed during 2023 with numbers still increasing.

It seems that the worst of the needed cancellations is past with only a couple of cancellations today but it may be worth checking if you are booked to fly.

In order to ensure a full flight schedule over the Chinese New Year Cathay are offering its aircrew a special Chinese New Year bonus

    Condensed from Bloomberg today –
“Hong Kong’s largest airline will offer a special flying allowance between Feb. 7 and 18, according to people familiar with the matter. Aircrew will be eligible for bonuses of 30%, 25% or 15% of their usual hourly flying rates, they said, asking not to be identified because they’re not authorized to speak publicly.”
