30 May seems to be the last day you can redeem your Diamond Club points for Star Alliance redemptions, excluding Lufthansa Group Airlines (which are already ended).

Don’t leave it until the last minute to call up as it became very busy indeed as we got closer to the Lufty deadline!

After May, it is my understanding that bmi points will migrate to BA on a 1:1 basis, though I’m not certain if this happens automatically.

    From the BA site:

“We are creating an online tool that will allow Diamond Club and Executive Club customers to undertake transfers, which will be available from 3 July”

    http://www.britishairways.com/travel/bmi-diamond-club/public/en_gb

I think this means that it will be a manual process.

It seems to be that the exchange will be available in either direction, which makes you wonder what you will be able spend your bmi miles on with *A no longer an option – surely more than M&S vouchers?

Does seem strange. I imagine you can still redeem aboard BA flights but I can’t see any advantage to not converting them to avois.

If you’re planning on redeeming anything, it would be best to be on the phone with them today rather than leaving it last minute.

Be aware that even though you can transfer miles 1-1 – the cost in terms of miles is higher to ‘buy’ a redemption ticket on BA in BC and FC than it is on bmi (mostly the same in Economy) + you will be charged a higher amount in terms of the cash and payment requirements. – significantly!! So if you know where you are going and can burn those miles now……do it.

Also as an aside for those interested, there is a forum advising that Aegean Air is also happy to tier match bmi card holders with their Miles and Bonus – so if you are bmi gold or silver- you can now automatically maintain your status with them and Star Alliance. And the response is very quick.

One can only take ones hat off to Aegean for their ingenious marketing tool of getting more loyal customers! Good luck to them. It’s brilliant.

For those who are leaving this last-minute, I can’t stress enough how important it is that you use sources such as http://www.checkmytrip.com to confirm the redemption has been ticketed, and chase bmi very quickly if it has not been ticketed by the end of the day.

Once the hard deadline of 31 May is reached, ticketing and changes will be impossible.

Rang them this morning and booked up 3 return flights to Sweden. Took a while to get through but the service was very good.

Just received the following by email:

    Dear XXXXX,

We have recently been in contact with you regarding some changes to Diamond Club and the transition of bmi flights to British Airways, which followed the sale of bmi to IAG, the owner of British Airways.

    Star Alliance exit

In the communication we sent to you on 20 April 2012, we let you know that bmi would exit the Star Alliance on 31 May 2012 and from tomorrow (01 June 2012), you will no longer be able to take advantage of the Star Alliance benefits associated with your membership tier level, including earning status miles or destinations miles with Star Alliance airlines, or spending destinations miles with these partners.
If you are a Gold or Silver member you will also receive a new Diamond Club card, without the Star Alliance logo.

However, you will still be able to earn status miles on bmi flights with a bmi flight number and can also earn and spend your destinations miles on bmi and British Airways flights.

Gold and Silver members can continue to access the bmi and selected BA lounges at London Heathrow and London Gatwick.
For an up to date list of the remaining Diamond Club partners, please click here.

    Keeping you updated

We will continue to keep you updated on the transition of bmi into British Airways. The next Diamond Club update will follow in June.
For more information on the ongoing changes to Diamond Club please visit ba.com/diamondclub.

    Regards

    Keeley Downing

    Diamond Club Manager
