    * There’s no airline entry for Bamboo Airways so am filing this under “Miscellaneous” *

Has Vietnam’s private airline Bamboo Airways over-expanded ?

Those readers who may have booked flights with this carrier from Europe (or Australia) or within SE Asia in the coming weeks and months may wish to recheck their itineraries.

Today Flightglobal.com reports that Bamboo Airways will trim its operating schedule in a bid to “optimise resource allocation.” It will restructure operations.

In a media statement dated July 25 Bamboo Airways, quoted by Flightglobal, says “it plans to adjust the flight schedule and frequency of some routes” from August.

This will be “an attempt to restructure the fleet for resource optimisation and efficiency improvements towards sustainable development.”

Any changes would be “communicated directly” to affected passengers.

Recently the airline has seen a number of senior management changes.

More details from the Flightglobal link. Note that some readers may encounter a paywall.

In October 2022 Tom Otley published a business class report of his flight with Bamboo Airways between Hanoi and London Heathrow.

This is very much an airline in crisis!

In March 2022, Trịnh Văn Quyết – the founder and chairman of Bamboo Airways its parent group FLC and many other FLC’s key people were arrested over alleged market manipulation, fraud and appropriation of property. It seems that the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam became involved in the running of the airline to ensure the safety of passengers. The owners were forced by the government to devest ownership and the government sought new owners.

Currently (as at 1st July) Bamboo operate an ‘all leased mixed fleet of 30 X A319 and 320 aircraft that are much older than is the airline and 3 %year old Dreamliners and 3 XE190. They expanded very fast and was sold in June 2023.

On 21 June 2023, Him Lam Group was officially announced as the new owner of Bamboo Airways. Shortly after the Him Lam takeover it was widly reported that the airline was filing for bankruptcy protection due to “the inability of the new investors.” The carrier later refuted the mentioned rumours while committing that it will be maintaining all normal operations.

It seems that it not able to maintain normal operations and there must be legitimate doubts about its future.

Now is not the time I feel to purchase a ticket on Bamboo

Appears that Bamboo Airways will soon cancel its London route.

Checking Bambooairways.com there are no LGW flights available for sale after end October.

(LGW is the London airport used by Bamboo Airways)
