cwoodwardParticipantThe airport has been capable of landing the A380 since 2014 but had no infrastructure in place.
However the airport is undergoing a major R5 billion upgrade which involves A380 infrastructure as well a major capacity increase. Also a new ‘mid -field’ cargo terminal.I am not sure however if the A380 infrastructure is completed yet but it should not be too far away with indications that it will be finished later in the year.
A second international airport “Cape Town Winelands” located on the outskirts of Durbanville – (roughly halfway between the city centre and the scenic winelands) – is being hugely expanded from the old but popular domestic light aircraft strip .
Over the next three years the airport is set to complete a R7-billion upgrade and expansion that will create a second commercial airport serving Cape Town and the Western Cape with ‘wide-body’ aircraft and international traffic facilities and capacity the ‘new’ airport set to serve a growing market for both domestic and international travellers.
The route between Cape Town and Johannesburg is one of the world’s busiest air corroders , and with its rapid of the the Western Cape a convenient air link between the Winelands and Johannesburg will be welcomed
Landside the revamped terminal precinct is set to be surrounded by vineyards, and will include a public plaza, a hotel, aviation museum, conference centre, wine tasting experience and an outdoor amphitheatre hosting up to 5000 people. By 2050, the airport will process up to two million international tourists, and three million domestic travellers per year, accounting for around one-quarter of all air traffic into the region.

sparkyflierParticipantRe what will BA do with the A380 that is being taken away from the DFW route in the coming Winter timetable, it seems it is not an exciting new route, but being switched to Miami, where last season there was one daily A380, but will now be 2 x A380 per day.
Their partner AA will be sending one 772 and one 77W per day.
Given AinHK flew this route recently and saw all premium seats were taken this is perhaps a sensible move, and in addition likely way more leisure traffic to MIA than DFW.

AlanOrton1ParticipantI’d second MIA is a profitable route for BA (and their partners at AA).
Notwithstanding the very dated satellite terminal BA use, the often very long wait at CPB (though DFW isn’t great on this front either), this route always seems packed to the rafters.
Miami itself has grown significantly as an economic centre too.
VS also now double daily LHR to MIA.17 Apr 2024

LetsFlyNowParticipantMIA is extremely popular with Europeans in winter. LH plies the B747-8 with first class on this route. The margins must be very good or else BA wouldn’t be putting the A380 on the route. Lots of capacity in economy as well as many seats in premium cabins.

AndrewinHKParticipantBritish Airways updates aircraft for several U.S. destinations starting October 27:
• Baltimore (BWI) 777-200ER replaces 787-8
• New Orleans (MSY) 777-200ER replaces 787-8
• Dallas (DFW) 777-300ER replaces A380 (through December 31)1 user thanked author for this post.

AlanOrton1ParticipantThanks AndrewinHK – I have a DFW segment in J later this year that was (last week) showing a 787-10.
Just looked at MMB and sure enough it is now a 773 – with the new CS layout.1 user thanked author for this post.

sparkyflierParticipantWonder if the 788s are being taken off some routes to allow for their refurbishment to include Club Suites.

AndrewinHKParticipantI would guess so sparkyflier. Interestingly in the April order book from Airbus, BA has ordered 5 aircraft, 3 a320 neo and 2 a321 neo. IAG earnings this morning, again very strong, passenger numbers and revenue both ahead of estimates.

AMcWhirterParticipantEffective November 4 BA will resume non-stop LHR-Jeddah service.
Flights operate x4 per week.
Flight numbers: BA132 and BA133.
Flights now open for booking.

sparkyflierParticipantAnnouncement timed to coincide with a UK trade mession there. No surprise as a 5 /6 hour flight is easy to fit in when you a shortish of long haul planes.
Wonder if Dammam and Muscat are on the way back.. but the latter especially will depend on Oman Air FINALLY joining Oneworld.

CheerUpParticipantInterestingly, the inagural flight (and subsequent Monday flights) is operated by the 787-10, whilst the other days operated by 787-9 with the outaded Club product.
Worth noting for anyone planning to travel down in J.1 user thanked author for this post.

CheerUpParticipant@sparkyflier Yes initially thought it would be the inagural that was 787-10 only, but seems to be all future Monday’s.
I am struggling to see however how my post can be taken to be inappropriate…
