I might point out that KLM have recently proposed and enacted a voluntary unpaid work scheme, reported in Travel Trade Gazette.

Cathay Pacific launched an unpaid leave scheme in April, covered in depth by Bloomberg and USA Today amongst others.

Marriott are in the midst of a reduced-pay leave strategy, enforced quarterly leave and redeployment.

Outside of the travel and hospitality industries, these programmes are contemporaneously highly prevalent also.

BA’s move may be (typically) poorly communicated, and comes perhaps a little late in the cycle, but its tardiness serves only to highlight its lack of uniqueness.
