In the past, this kind of thing tended only to make sense for top-ups and MFU (now UUA) opportunities. However, the new shorthaul Reward Flight Saver system possibly makes banking a few Avios more attractive.

Even after the November changes, it seems to still be the case that short-notice revenue fares can be high, whilst Avios availability remains – at £27 or £34 return plus the points.
