When moving house last year I found a pamphlet from 1980 with Qantas fares on its flight to Singapore via Bahrain. The Apex return fare was £900. That’s £2700 in today’s money. You don’t even have to wait for a sale to get a flat bed in business class for that money today
Meanwhile Qatar (and Emirates and Etihad) are regularly advertising £500 fares to Singapore these days, including APD which never existed back in the day
The fact is fares have never been so cheap – particularly on routes served by the Gulfies. That’s fantastic for all my friends who want to fly around the world for not a lot of money. So, should you want to go back to 9 abreast seating, or are you willing to suck it up 10 abreast for an 80% saving? Or pay, what, £50 extra for an exit row seat on BA? Don’t like it, then, as TMConsulting says, pay extra and fly Singapore Airlines
