I was thinking about it VK.

What are the main benefits of this against the BA Amex card?

The major downside seems to be that the 2-4-1 on basis #2 is only valid for Economy, whereas the BA Amex allows redemption of 2-4-1 in all classes, incuding First.

The LTSB offer loses a lot of attractiveness, for me, as a result.

Seems only of use if you don`t want to pay the higher fees on the BA Amex card and are not concerned over earning a few less miles and don`t use 2-4-1 in anything other than economy.

Unless you just need a back up Mastercard for those few times that you cant use Amex somewhere.

Personally i went for the Tesco Clubcard Mastercard for that route though..

So option 2 is 11,875 Avios for £25 fee plus £1,500 spend. This compares to £207 buying 12k Avios on the BAEC site.

It’s more like £25 for 11,875 vs. £207 for 12,000 as the cc spend requirement doesn’t “cost” you anything – assuming you have a reasonably large cc spend every month – especially as the sales loom large in January.

Quite correct VK, and that is what I meant to say. £25 fee plus modest spend to get 11,875 Avios rather than buying 12k for £207. Bargain.

A quick look on the BAEC website for a European flight shows that 4,500 avios would be required, or only 2,250 plus £25. This means that 12,000 avios costs around £133. A lot cheaper than just buying 12k for £207.

As 10,000 Avios is now enough to upgrade from WT+ to Club from London to New York, it’s well worth doing.
