Business book review: Stop Talking, Start Doing

12 Oct 2011 by Tom Otley
Business book review: Stop Talking, Start Doing  A kick in the pants in six parts...  by Shaa Wasmund and Richard Newton £9.99 A short inspirational book for those needing “A Kick in the Pants in Six Parts”. Read cover to cover, it only takes an hour, but there are lots of quotations and exhortations from everyone from Muhammed Ali to Einstein, John Wayne to William James. The book would work best as a gift for someone who is always telling you their dream without ever doing anything about it. As several of the quotes here echo, “When you have to make a choice and don’t make it, that is in itself a choice" (William James) or more succinctly, “Indecision becomes decision with time.” Procrastination is the enemy here, along with fear “Courage is being scared to death... and saddling up anyway” (John Wayne). The text is made up of short sentences wit spaces in-between, and the clear layout, illustrations and amusing cartoons and diagrams would help anyone who has been assailed by doubts over a new business venture. That said, it isn’t all about positive thinking. There is lots of good advice about doing research, making your goals identifiable and achievable, and even where it strays into standard management and motivational speech (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, for instance, it keeps it short and to the point. There’s nothing new here for anyone who reads these sorts of books, but if its your first one (or your freind’s, it's likely to create a big impression. Tom Otley
