British Airways has announced plans to fly to the Norwegian city of Tromso this winter.
The flag carrier will operate a twice-weekly (Thursday and Sunday) service from Heathrow between 1 December, 2024 and 27 March, 2025.
It will be the first time BA has flown to the city, which will become the most northerly destination in the airline’s network.
Located in the Arctic Circle, Tromso is known for its Christmas markets, winter activities including skiing, mountaineering and whale watching, and the possibilities of seeing the aurora borealis.
Flights will be operated by an A320neo aircraft, with schedules as follows:
- Departs Heathrow on Thursdays at 0825, arriving into Tromso at 1300, before returning at 1400 and landing back into London at 1645
- Departs Heathrow on Sundays at 0815, arriving into Tromso at 1215, before returning at 1340 and landing back into London at 1625
Return fares start from £153, and BA highlighted that customers can take skiing or snowboarding equipment as part of their checked baggage so long as the bag is within 190 x 75 x 65cm.
SAS is also launching seasonal flights between Heathrow and Tromso from 2 November, and fellow IAG carrier Iberia will commence a Madrid-Tromso this winter.
Existing seasonal services from the UK include Norwegian from Gatwick, and Wizz Air from Luton.
Commenting on the news Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ chief planning and strategy officer, said:
“Those who missed the northern lights in the UK need not worry! We are excited to welcome Tromso to our route network – it is a growing winter leisure market thanks to its abundance of cold-weather activities and we’ll be the only premium carrier operating there from the UK.
“We’ve optimised the schedule for three- and four-night trips, which we know are perfect for a destination like this.”
Other recent British Airways route news includes the resumption of flights to Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur in October and November respectively, and the return of the carrier’s Heathrow-Jeddah service also from November.
