Taiwan’s hotel scene gets a boost

9 Jan 2009 by intern11
After a long draught, Taiwan is seeing the arrival of new accommodation options. A small market, hotel openings have been scarce in recent years. Last November, Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Tainan opened with 336 guestrooms, measuring an average size of 50sqm. Tainan in southern Taiwan is regarded as the oldest city in the country and is famous for heritage and snack food. Amenities include the Horizon Club, offering 51 guestrooms and the usual corporate perks of express check in and check out, lounge for daily breakfast and evening cocktails and a meeting space. Dining establishments consist of the all-day Café at Far Eastern, Foo Num Court with a 360-degree panoramic view of Tainan City and specialising in Huaiyang, Cantonese and Taiwanese fare, Lobby Lounge and Mezzanine Bar. For meetings and banquets, multi-functional meeting rooms, the pillarless 1,075sqm Far Eastern Grand Ballroom and the only circular, theatre-style auditorium in the city are available. The Spa has six treatment rooms with their own exclusive facilities, while a gym and large aerobics studio round up the fitness alternatives. Sheraton Yilian Resort Later this year, Sheraton Yilan Resort in Yilan County is scheduled for a launch. Perched on a mountain, the 180-room property will target the meetings and events market, who will find its 14,000 square feet of space useful for a variety of functions. Other attractions – also intended to draw leisure travellers – include eight dining outlets, health club and spa, hot spring facilities and indoor swimming pool. With a new expressway linking Taipei to Yilan, travel can be done in over an hour. In downtown Taipei, Blanc de Chine, located near the railway station, will open with 300 rooms around November or December. www.shangri-la.com www.sheraton.com Margie T Logarta
