Starwood opened over 100 hotels in 2015

7 Jan 2016 by BusinessTraveller

Starwood Hotels and Resorts opened a record number of hotels during 2015, with the company also reporting the highest number of signed properties in a single year.

As the group gears up for its merger with Marriott International (see news November 16, 2015), it says that a total of 105 hotels were opened across its brands last year.

This record figure was helped by around one third of the “new” properties being conversions of existing hotels.

Starwood also signed a record 220 hotels in 2015, with the “select serve” or mid-market segment accounting for over 50 per cent of the total.

Among the milestones for 2015 were the 700th opening in The Americas, the 250th in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, the 300th in Asia Pacific and the 150th in Greater China.

The group also opened its 100th Aloft hotel in 2015, a brand which Starwood says “experienced incredible growth momentum last year with a 66 per cent increase in signings over the prior year”.

In the luxury and lifestyle segment the group saw a total of 29 signings across its St Regis, Luxury Collection and W Hotels brands, up 40 per cent on 2014, while Starwood’s largest brand, Sheraton, also saw a 40 per cent increase in signings.
