Industrial action by baggage handling staff at Stansted airport this weekend has been called off, following talks between trade unions and employers Swissport.
Members of the GMB union had voted “overwhelming” for strike action, over claims that new shift patterns could result in pay cuts of up to £1,000 (see online news March 29).
But the union said today that industrial action had been suspended following talks in London. In a joint statement Swissport and the GMB and Unite unions said:
“We are pleased that passengers and families travelling over the Easter weekend will no longer face potential disruption.
“We will continue our talks in an attempt to reach a joint consensus that ensures we understand the commercial challenges and balance the need for the work life balance of our membership."
