“Six-star” hotel to open in Knightsbridge

A 36-suite townhouse hotel in Knightsbridge says it is aiming to become the first six-star hotel in London when it opens in 2012.

The Wellesley will be located at 11 Knightsbridge, in a building formerly used as commercial offices and owned by Arab Investments (which also owns London’s Ten Manchester Street Hotel – click here for a review).

The hotel is set to open in November 2012, after refurbishment works costing £36 million. According to the release the property will feature interiors by Fox Linton, utilising the building’s 1920’s Art Deco history, and “striking wide collastrades” around which the hotel’s heated Cigar Terrace (with the UK’s largest bespoke humidor), Crystal Bar with a whisky and cognac wall, and Italian eatery Oval Restaurant will be located.

There will also be a jazz bar, and guest rooms over six floors including a top floor four-bedroom suite with views of Hyde Park.

It looks more like a fire station in that photo

Granted you have the world's only proclaimed "7 star" hotel in Dubai, I think the Arab owners are taking luxury to a new level that exceeds today's world hotel class standards. With that being the case, as long as they live up to the hype and produce a product on par with that title, I think it will create a new category of luxury. Based on the description above, I believe they are indeed on the right track.

Just goes to show how ridiculous star ratings are around the world. That a hotel owner (Arab, no doubt) can claim to be 6 star and then everyone thinks it must be awesome luxury... who defines "luxury" ? ... more gold and marble, more hideous chandeleirs, and now the UK’s largest bespoke humidor plus a Crystal Bar with a whisky and cognac wall.. what next! Hotel owners live in a dream world. Stick with the worldwide brands you know and don't patronise these one-off fantasies.
