Lufthansa to deploy B747-8 to Newark

23 Feb 2015 by Clement Huang

Lufthansa will deploy its new B787-8 aircraft on the Frankfurt–Newark route ahead of schedule. Originally slated for a March 29 service entry, the German carrier has decided to push this to February 23.

The news, first reported by airlineroute.net ensures that the B747-8 will replace the ageing B747-400 on this popular route. When comparing the two 747 variants, the “Dash 8” is 30 per cent quieter, 16 per cent more fuel-efficient, and boasts 13 per cent lower seat-mile costs per trip.

More significantly, the deployment of the B747-8 will enable Lufthansa to offer its new premium economy product on the Frankfurt–Newark route. The carrier does offer two different configurations to its B747-8, with capacity ranging from 340 to 364 seats – up from the 330 and 352 seats offered on the B747-400 (available in two configurations too).

Business Traveller Asia-Pacific will be travelling to Frankfurt in the coming weeks as a guest of Lufthansa. Stay tuned for our Tried & Tested review of the carrier’s premium economy product.

Flight LH402 will depart Frankfurt daily at 1330 and arrive in Newark at 1610. The return LH403 flight will take off from Newark at 1810, to touch back down in Frankfurt at 0745 the following day.
