ITC Royal Gardenia gains LEED Platinum status

12 Jan 2010 by Mark Caswell

Bangalore’s ITC Royal Gardenia has become the first hotel in India, and the largest in the world, to receive the LEED Platinum rating for environmentally sustainable construction.

The hotel opened late last year (see online news October 16, 2009), and incorporates eco-friendly initiatives including solar energy, renewable energy and rainwater harvesting systems, and recycling and solid waste reduction programmes.

The property has now been awarded the highest rating in the LEED scheme by the Indian Green Building Council, one of 16 established members of the World Green Building Council.

The first hotel to obtain the LEED Platinum certification was the Proximity Hotel In Greensboro, USA in 2008.
