TSAL unveils new airline Vistara

12 Aug 2014 by GrahamSmith

Tata SIA Airlines Limited (TSAL) has announced the brand name of its new airline — Vistara.

A collaboration between the Indian conglomerate Tata and Singapore Airlines, the carrier is headquartered in Delhi and is set to start operating in October.

Vistara's first aircraft will be an A320-200. There are plans to increase its fleet to 20 aircraft, including A320neos, within five years.

While routes have yet-to-be confirmed, a proposal document (see below) published by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in India suggests that Vistara will fly domestically in that country, with Mumbai, Goa, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Srinagar, Patna and Chandigarh touted as the first destinations that the carrier will serve during its first year of operation.

All flights will originate from Delhi.

"Vistara" is derived from the Sanskrit word "vistaar", which translates to "limitless expanse". The logo is inspired by a "yantra", a mathematical form representing the unbounded universe.

The crew and staff will be dressed in uniforms designed by Abraham & Thakore, an India-based design company helmed by a Singapore-born designer (which marries well with the background of Vistara airline). The brand name and logo have been the work of brand consulting and design company Brand Union Ray+Keshavan.

Swee Wah Mak, director of TSAL and executive vice-president commercial of SIA, said: "From a global investor's perspective the Indian aviation sector has a lot of potential for growth and I am delighted that SIA now has a fruitful role to play here.

"SIA's world-renowned tradition of service excellence will contribute to the creation of the finest flying experience in the Indian skies through Vistara."
