SGJNI1961ParticipantFirst post, sorry if the usual suspects think the answer is obvious, but I would appreciate the advice of those who do this trip regulary, whereas for me it is a one off.
I have transfer form LHR to LCY with about three and a half hours to do it. This seems straighforward enough but as I am starting in Dublin, in which airport do I buy some gifts duty free? I am unfamiliar with the facilities at LCY and Dublin usually offers worse prices than, say, LHR. Also, on the ESTA application, do I give SNN or LCY as port of “boarding”? All help appreciated.
Do you all usually not get along or is the “banter” just amongst friends?
Many Thanks.

LuganoPirateParticipantLCY and LHR duty free prices are more or less the same. So if cheaper than Dublin that’s where I’d buy them.
As for the ESTA, as described LCY would be your departure port but I don’t think it’s that important.

StephenLondonParticipantLCY duty-free is not all that terrific…it is small, with limited selection. What is it you are looking to buy? There is a small selection of the usual items at LCY (cigarettes, perfume, booze) and quite a nice watch shop, but not much more. There is no in-flight shopping on the BA001, by the way.

eybusinessParticipantHi. You have to purchase your duty free at LCY if you want to take it as hand luggage. Otherwise you could purchase your duty free at LHR or Dublin, but you need to put it in your suitcase for the hold. LCY Duty free is not that bad. For a small airport it has lots to offer I think.

I haven’t a clue about duty-free prices as I only ever buy the odd bottle of vino collapso.
Have a great trip!

VintageKrugParticipantThere is a small Duty Free shop/kiosk in Shannon next to the waiting area, but it’s often closed and/or won’t necessarily have what you’re looking for.

Will the rules at DUB allow you to buy at duty-free prices if you are flying first to the UK? I don’t think so.
Irish duty on alcohol is so high that if you cannot get the duty-free price in DUB do not buy anything there – the UK is cheaper.
At DUB there is a spectacular selection of Irish whiskey (and some other inferior stuff), but the duty-paid prices are eye-watering and more expensive than the same products in the UK. Unless you need something very special that can only be found in Ireland then DUB is a complete non-starter if you have to buy duty-paid.
If you are flying into LHR Terminal 1 there is no arrival shop for you, so you don’t have the option of buying at LHR and then packing it into your suitcase before you check in again at LCY. All BA and EI flights to LHR use T1.
That leaves LCY as your only option if you are price-driven – but the selection there (of everything), while reasonable, is still less than you will find at DUB.
When you land at SNN for pre-clearance you will be in the terminal for no more than 20 minutes, probably much less. There is no time to go shopping (you are pointed straight back onto the aircraft once you’ve finished with the DHS) and the (small) shop in that part of the terminal is generally not opened for that flight.
If you are buying for yourself then you might want to consider holding off until you get to the US and buying on your return. The duty-free prices there are better than on this side of the pond and you can repack your purchases in your hold luggage before you check in again at LHR for the last leg home.
Good luck on the A318. It’s a hard-to-get type that’s nice to have on your list, but the onboard experience is rather disappointing compared to the regular CW cabin. Come back and let us know how you got on.

WoburnManParticipantHello again – fair comment. I can’t really give you any solid ideas only that my experience wasn’t particular good as I was diverted into LCY during the fog in December. Anyway having said that if you are trying to get across town it can be done on the Heathrow Express, tube and the DLR beitall the other way round to your trip it took me 1hr 30mins airport to airport cost in total £22.50 one ticket fits all. I did enquiry about a taxis being late at night and all that good stuff but the cabbie want £130 !! Have a good trip.

LuganoPirateParticipantWhat LCY does have is a very good selection of books on business, corporate management and so on. The shop’s on the left after you enter the building.

Papillion53ParticipantWelcome SGJNI1961 – as none of the above Duty Free rascals have answered your question about our banter – I like to think it’s all given and taken in good part! It does of course, get a bit “heated” at times, and then the BT metaphorical whip is cracked and all calms down as you’ve no doubt seen.
I would also like to think that if we ever all met in person, we would have one wonderful party! :-)))))
Congratulations on your Avois LONG HAUL redemption – I am referring of course to another “old chestnut”! LOL!
Please do write a trip report – I really do enjoy reading them and they so often contain hints and tips for us all. 🙂
How are you doing your transfer? We usually use
http://www.londonheathrowcars.com as they are competitive and always turn up with good drivers and decent clean cars. Disclaimer – I have no affiliation with them.Have a great trip. 🙂
