I recently read in BT that certain tickets are cheaper to buy from a european hub i.e., frankfurt, amsterdam or munich, can any one remember which edition it was in and how i go about buying the tickets, i am looking to book 3 tickets in business class to LAX.

It varies between different places. Could also be Dublin or Oslo. Worth a bit of trial and error.

You can buy on BA.com, plus also the positioning flights needed to get to and from your start point.

I use Oslo for Australia, save a small packet. I think for LAX Dublin is worth a nose.

As previously recommended by SimonS1 (VMTs!):

    http://matrix.itasoftware.com

This is a seriously useful tool for pricing itineraries.

As a frequent user of ita matrix, I second Anthony’s suggestion but it requires a little research on the net to understand the language that it needs to optimise your search. Alternatively, a more user friendly but also (to my surprise) very useful tool is Google flights (Google actually owns ita matrix). It does limit you to using only 4 airport options in any one leg ie one origin with 3 possible destinations, but is great since unlike matrix you can click on say “Book with AA” at the bottom and it feeds your itinerary into AAs website for you to simply enter your payment details etc.

I flew 2 weeks ago DUB(AA)CLT(AA)LAX(AA)LHR(BA)DUB in Business Class for GBP 1125 all taxes etc included. Pre-clearing Immigration & Customs in DUB was a dream and meant smooth convenient arrival in CLT (two gates down from arrival and we were in the Admirals Lounge). It was interesting to note that I got more Avios Tier points for the CLT/LAX sector than either of the transatlantic sectors.

I could have flown BA LAX/LHR in their A380 but the AA 777 seat is more comfortable.

@alexthegreat….The transcon TP haul is a known anomaly which frequent fliers use to gain or maintain elite ff status! Booking a transatlantic itinerary in J will book the us domestics into the first class fare and since clt-lax is more than 2000 miles, you get the full 210 tier points. The exception is when you book on the BA website since it books the transcon flights into the business class date hence you’ll only get the 140 TPs.

ARN is also a good starting point to look for cheaper tickets (east & west)

ITA is a good source but I do find it somewhat hard to use. I prefer KAYAK which seems more intuitive.

@coudntthinkofaname….Thanks for the explanation. I did book via AA website which explains the 210 tier points.

I returned from the US yesterday after starting my journey in Dublin.
I had to attend a wedding in Las Vegas so added in a stay in Los Angeles on the way out, and New York on the way home. All in Business Class for about £1350.00. it would have been cheaper if I had no stopovers.
We were booked DUB/JFK/LAX outbound but it ended up being overbooked so we were re-routed via LHR on AA’s 777-300. As mentioned above, it is a fantastic Business Class compared to BA Club World. I will choose AA over BA for Transatlantic from now on (if a 777-300). I would definitely start my journey in Dublin again – it just meant heading over there from Aberdeen the night before, not too much of a hassle.

    Hello connorJohnson

Sorry for being late in posting a reply.

It’s actually a piece I wrote. It appeared in the May issue. I suggested a number of departure points including Oslo, Dublin, Amsterdam and Milan for various routes, including Los Angeles.

I’ve found the easiest way to use the ITA site is to cut and paste the instructions from this article so that every conceivable EU starting point is included.

I tend to start a lot of long-haul trips in Amsterdam.

Go to your booking engine of choice, be it the airline’s own or expedia, kayak, etc, and choose AMS as the starting point.
