Tried and Tested: JBL On Time Micro

If you haven’t already invested in a sound-dock for your iPhone/iPod this unit from JBL is one to consider. While it’s too cumbersome (800g, 20.3cm x 20.3cm x 11.6cm) to pack in a suitcase and lacks sufficient richness of sound warrant living room status, it is ideal for the bedroom, particularly as it features a built-in alarm clock.

The speaker dock will charge your Apple gadget when slotted in place just above the blue LCD display clock face, and with its smooth curves and robust ergonomic design in silver and glossy black, makes for an attractive, functional accessory. Although at almost £130 is quite expensive.

As well as AM/FM radio (which I didn’t use much as already have a one), the portable device can be plugged into the mains so there is no need to pay extra for batteries, and also comes with external antennas to improve reception and a small remote that controls your iPhone/iPod. I found this really handy but a little confusing to use at the beginning, as there are so many buttons.

The general quality of the audio is clear, so fine for every-day listening but if you are a bass lover you won’t be satisfied. That said, this is to be expected of compact sound-docks like this, as they can never compete with full stereo systems and large speakers when playing music. For this reason, the On Time Micro does the job it is designed to do well.

PROS Easy to use, built-in alarm, clear audio.

CONS Overly complicated remote.

PRICE £129.99
