Just bought some Virgin airmiles and am curious about an additional fee.

At check out, a “HANDLING FEE” of £15 appeared on the final amount due. I checked the page where the cost of the airmiles are detailed, (from 1,000 to 100,000 are priced) and there was a further mention of the addition £15 or $25 as being a “TRANSACTION CHARGE”…

As this is an automated on line purchase, what is the Handling Fee or Transaction charge for???

Many airlines levy some kind of charge for online bookings, it only differs in the amount and how they disguise it.

Whilst the reality is that when you book online, the airline is saving money in staff time, training etc, they would argue that it represents the cost of setting up and maintaining the infrastructure that allows passengers 24/7 access to make bookings.

It’s just another little bit of gouging.
