    Interesting report from Reuters yesterday.

It seems New Zealand may follow with a laptop ban. Should that happen Qatar Airways may well drop its recently introduced non-stop service from Doha to Auckland.

As I have often mentioned, these ultra long-haul flights have high operating costs even with fuel at its current low prices.

Qatar’s boss Al-Baker confirms this when quoted as saying “it is a very expensive route for us to operate.”

Sad if laptop bans reduce development of new routes when they’re safer in the cabin and 1min to swab for explosives going through security. Easy to do and are laptops x-rayed again for explosives before put in the hold? Checked three times by different staff (xray, swab, xray) before in hold so can be sure (to be sure) they’re only dangerous for batteries!

DOH/AKL was never going to be a money-maker for QR.

I suspect the main reason they decided to fly it was to take the crown of World’s Longest Non-stop Flight from EK.
