    A weekend topic.

At times, we all of us are at risk of getting stuck – storms, planes gone technical, ATC failures and so on. Where is the least worst place to be stuck – either a city or an airport? And where would be the worst?

For example, when the Iceland volcano erupted, I was in Porto. Far from a hardship posting: a wonderful extra holiday. For today’s ATC fiasco I am stuck in the Scandinavia lounge at Kastrup: fine, for those of us who like Danish food and drinks.

Which city would be the worst? – for me, probably somewhere with a high crime rate, like Caracas. Which airport would be the worst? Well, it might be LHR…..

Best: Bahamas (during volcanic chaos) – very little sympathy from the office for the enforced 8 day extension to my trip… Got a chance to explore some of the more remote islands on Southern Air.

Worst: perhaps Mumbai. A shoddy airport at the best of times and even less pleasant at 2am during disruption.

Best airport to be stuck :
    Changi

    Worst airport to be stuck:
Obviously there are many airports in 3rd or developing world that are pure hell at the best of times but in the developed world, as many will no doubt be experiencing today, my vote would go to Heathrow

During the unexpected snow of November 2010 I was stuck in Orlando. My line manager was actually sympathetic because he was stuck in the Bahamas. It was hell having to entertain myself with the rides for another 2 days. Absolute hell …

Male on the Maldives for a week. If confined to an airport then Zurich.

    Worst place. CDG or LHR.

    Worst:
being stuck in winter inAlesund Norway in the 80ies. A very boring to tears place.

    Best:
stuck in BKK on a MNL-BKK-FRA flight.
Had a great day and expenses paid by airline.

Worst : Ilha do Sal in the 70s at the Atlantis Hotel. Over Christmas too!

Best : London during the ash cloud. I was accommodated by the very generous client I was working for, at the Cumberland hotel.

Best: Abu Dhabi, better still if it was going to be for a while since Ferrari World isn’t far away 😉

Worst: Heathrow. Painful going from there at the best of times, although I was pleasantly surprised by T5 on a recent trip to NYC. Early morning on a weekday and it wasn’t overcrowded and horrid.

Almost best: Sandy Lane, Barbados at the end of the Ash Cloud ‘crisis’. The extra night was all arranged but in the end it was only a 3-4 hour delay spent on the golf club terrace. It was a client event and I wouldn’t rush back to the hotel but the golf club was fantastically well run by a gentleman called ‘Elvis’..

Best: being put up in a 5* Lima hotel with swimming pool etc. during a 24-hour delay and being upgraded to Biz back to London.

Worst: flight cxd from Laayoune to Las Palmas. Next one in 48 hours. I liked the place but was ready to leave. That was a looooong w’end.
And how can I forget being stranded here in Luxembourg after another cxd flight on Christmas Eve due to heavy snow. Next one on the 27th.

I’ve been stuck in a few airports but -thank God-only for hours, never for days.
The best was definitely Heathrow because it had the cleanest loos.
The worst was Schipol because I couldn’t find anywhere to buy a drink near my gate.
I wouldn’t want to get stuck in any airport outside Europe because in many countries cleanliness is not important and there’s nothing that I hate most than dirty loos. Also, in times of crisis I’d rather be around people who speak one of the languages I speak.
I’d probably rather get stuck in Heathrow because there are good shops, good restaurants, people speak English, loos are cleaned regularly and I know my whereabouts. Plus, it’s in the best city of the world!

Oh BA4ever, even though my Greek is very limited I would rather be stuck in Athens. The weather tends to be more clement than in London plus you are guaranteed the best frappes on the planet.

I’d hate to be stuck in Athens because it means that I wouldn’t have left for my destination. 😉
Everybody speaks English here so no worries regarding that. But the shops are so limited and if all lounges are like BA’s, there’s no decent view to make the wait more tolerant…

Interesting so many people have it in for Heathrow yet T5 is consistently voted amongst the best terminals in the world. I admit the other terminals at LHR are grim.

I’ve never been stranded but if I ever did experience severe delays, I would prefer to be in either Hong Kong or Changi.

Worst place to be stranded would have to be CDG. It’s a giant concrete toilet. Nothing more to be said.
