    Hi All,

Recently heard Virgin Atlantic are going to be introducing a new scheme for economy passengers, so that you can buy the seat next to you, for whatever reason. I’m not sure if it is live or not, but is definitely happening/happened this month, so keep an eye out. Prices range from £99-199 per single journey.

VS are definitely quite innovative when it comes to ancillaries, meaning if your generous companies only allow economy travel, you can still purchase:
    -extra legroom seats
    -exit row seats
-guest list (chauffeur, upper class wing, fast-track security, clubhouse, etc.)
    -extra seat

…and there are certainly more in the pipeline.

    Anyone interested?

You can book a “comfort seat” on BA shorthaul, though those who do so without medical justification are slightly sad individuals…!

Yes, but this is different because (a) BA didn’t publicise it, I travel with them loads and have never seen it online or heard of it, (b) it is really good value, (c) it is open for everyone, large and small, medical note or none, (d) Virgin Atlantic is good at publicity and has made its other ancillaries work really well.

How does it work now if you wanted to buy an extra seat for say a musical instrument.

Picking the cheapest outbound and return flights to NYC on 13/20 Feb 2013 a return fare of £418 is made up of £70 fare and the rest taxes so surely if there are no taxes, fuel surcharges or other fees to pay the extra cost for an extra seat at this fare is £70.

Virgin beats BA both in legroom and width.

Though BA beat their rivals Ryanair in some circumstances – just

BigDog, that survey was indeed fascinating.

Please bear in mind that once the last LGW 747 is refurbished this month, all premium economy seats will be 21″ wide- better even than CX.

    Some other things about SeatPlus:
-it is initially available at the call centre (not sure about website) but will probably be offered at the airport within a few months
-the pricing is designed to fall between extra legroom and premium upgrades

    Would anyone consider purchasing SeatPlus?

could be a way for getting a cheap seat for a child,or if the child is sitting on your lap could be a small price to pay for a extra seat if need be

Brian – I think you mean an infant as all children already have to purchase a seat

thanks craig did mean infant as opposed to a “child” good start to my posting career!

I’ve just purchased a ‘seat plus’ for MCO to MAN in December so my family of 3 have a row of 4 for and extra £60. I could have had up to 3 empty seats. I’m baffled as to how they can do this 8 months prior to the flight as surely they jeapodise seat revenue? Do they cancel if they need the seats?

Not sure Daniel though would have thought the heavy flights would be the Man to MCO as people would like to spend Christmas there

I may be wrong, but I believe (based on a conversation with someone in VS customer services a while back, though I may have misheard or misunderstood) that only a certain number of seats are made available for SeatPlus on each flight, and they’re the same seats as are available for redemption bookings. So potentially that means less reward availability if people buy SeatPlus, but on the other hand, economy redemptions are not a particularly good way to spend miles, in my view, due to the size of the taxes and APD payable on top, relative to the base fare, so no great loss IMHO. To answer LeTigre’s original question – I quite like it, and would consider using it; I did look at it for an upcoming flight, but decided the price for that particular sector was a bit high.

If I think of Swiss Business in Europe, where the seat us the same as in Economy, the middle seat is kept free but the fare is upwards of 3 x Economy. If I could pay just £70 to keep the seat next to me free I would without hesitation. This doesn’t make me a saddo, I just enjoy the extra space and comfort for a lower price which actually would make me very happy!

LuganoPirate, I think you’re absolutely spot on. Buying 3 seats outside of economy for a family holiday is hugely expensive so its great to have an option to get that extra bit space especially when you have a 3 year old child laying on your lap.
