Just read that US pre-clearance may be coming to LHR.

    http://m.atwonline.com/security/reports-us-seeks-more-pre-clearance-facilities-europe?

If it does happen, I’d seriously consider flying via LHR (as much as I dislike the airport) instead of my usual LX/LH.

LP – As much as I like the idea, the problem of having pre-clearance at LHR is the amount of space needed.

US flights depart from every terminal at LHR.

Perhaps it would be a better idea to trial pre-clearance at a regional airport which has spare capacity.

In some comments, it’s suggested all US flights would depart from one terminal, though it would take some re-organising. Or, T6 perhaps?

    Excellent idea Alex …..
Post Thursday I’d love to see these bribery induced new promised powers to include the ability of EDI to abolish APD and set up US pre-clearance.
Mind you ,I doubt if even these carrots would tempt the BA donkey to start regional (possibly wrong definition after Thursday) flights to its comfort blanket country.

canccklad – Thank you. As LP suggested, pre-clearance could be contained within one LHR terminal. But the problem is the amount of time that would take to organise

I suggested regional airports because they are far less busy (in regards to US flights) and it would give them a competitive edge over London (for those regional passengers who would be tempted to fly from London rather than use their local airport).

Why is it that opportunities are always problems, when Heathrow is the topic?

Given that BA has a major stake in the TATL market, the company should be pushing for pre-clearance, as it is presently a competitive edge and in the future may be ‘de-rigeur’ for serious international airports.

Instead of the US setting up Immigration outposts all around the world perhaps they should first improve the existing facilities they already have in the USA. Get those in order and ‘offshore’ clearance may not even be necessary?

Why nothing on the Scots referendum – English, i don’t know why the Scots won’t go for “freedom” but on this forum the huge plus is a new hub with shorter routes East & West without the silly taxes!

Good point Peter. If they win. I believe the ME3 already serve Edinburgh.
