SwissdiverParticipantLooking at options to go back and forth to Dubai right before Christmas. So, yes, it is a bit challenging… I found though flights that could work on … Ukraine Airlines. Did any of you try it? Do they have a real business class (i.e. not European style)? Would you recommend it?

JeffDParticipantSwissdiver, did you ever have the unfortunate please of fly Aeroflot back in the 70’s ? as that matches the service you will get.
In defence of Aeroflot I have flown them several times to Tokyo in recent years and the service was excellent. I think they offer a connecting flight via Moscow.
So using Ukraine airways I would use the acronym for the now defunct Sabena airways, such a bad experience never again.
Good luck, Jeff28 Nov 2014

GenerationYParticipantHi SwissDriver,
I have never flown with UIA, however there are some trip reports regarding the airline on the Internet. Here is being one.
Hope it helps.

AlexthegreatParticipantHello Swissdiver. I flew with UIA just over a week ago to Dubai for the F1 in Abu Dhabi. We flew both ways on new 737-900ER in Business Class and for the 5hr flight the service was good. Seating was like you find in Europe with 3 seats converted to 2 and a table in between. Seat pitch was good and food served was tasty. Here in Ukraine we only have a choice of narrow body aircraft to Dubai (EK’s A340 came and went) and most airlines from Europe operate wide body aircraft – but I guess the price dictates the choice.

SwissdiverParticipantAlex,
Thanks a lot! So European type of seats… That is the killing factor! I was considering UIA believing they had Middle-Eastern type of seats, but a half night flight on narrow seats, no thank you.1 Dec 2014

AlexthegreatParticipantSwissdiver,
The seats are wider as the armrests move in and a table comes down, but you are right they are not the same as those on the narrow body flights of gulf carriers. In any case hope to get a good fare for your tickets2 Dec 2014

AMcWhirterParticipantIt’s worth bearing in mind that UIA is suffering financial difficulties.
According to the Swiss aviation website ch-aviation.com UIA has failed to secure US$100 million in emergency funding from the government.
Staff numbers will be cut next year and there may well be some changes to the carrier’s route network.

AlexthegreatParticipantAMcWhirter,
According to the local forums, UIA failed to secure the funding (as credit line) requested from the government but the shareholders now provide this (as confirmed in the link you gave). They already cut flights to Russia because of the conflict (and maybe more if conflict continues), but they announced new flight to Beijing from Sumnmer.2 Dec 2014

AMcWhirterParticipantThat’s good to hear, Alexthegreat. However nothing is “set in stone” in the airline business and summer 2015 is a long time away. So who knows wheher or not the Beijing route will actually start ?
