Speedbird189ParticipantQR have signed an air service agreement with the up-and-coming St Vincent Airport in the Caribbean which will act as the hub airport for both St Vincent Island as well as the Grenadines.
This is perhaps the oddest and most unsuspecting announcement I’ve ever heard from one of the ME3. Panama City was a surprise, but this?! I suspect they’ll operate an A350 or 787, though it’ll be one of the longer journeys in their grasp. I have no clue as to why QR would launch a route to the Caribbean, though I’ve heard there are oil reserves in this area so this could be a clue.
Anyone else have an idea about the launch of this route? Surely they’re can’t be too many Vincentians wishing to travel anywhere other than the UK or the USA, let alone Qatar or the Middle East! I imagine the same is true for those living in Qatar, St Vincent is hardly the most popular resort in the Caribbean. Will this hamper BA’s hope to fly to the island?

PaulNeumannParticipantA place for the Sheikhs to hide their cash, maybe? Get easy citizenship for access to more countries than their terrorist supporting mother ship has…

RockhopperParticipantThis is an air services agreement which I suspect is politically motivated – it is not a guarantee that Qatar Airways are going to start flights to St Vincent. Remember each small Island nation has an equal vote in places like the UN……
Although it is a gateway to the Grenadines St Vincent has very little decent hotel accommodation so I would expect that development of new facilities for tourists will need to go hand in hand with any introduction of long haul wide body aircraft.,
The new airport in St Vincent has been a controversial project from the start – for anyone interested see the links below:

TheLionParticipantWell put Rockhopper. Politics would appear to be the motivating factor behind this agreement. There isn’t the demand to support a flight from Doha to St Vincent, regardless of connections.
For the Caribbean, an ME3 service to the likes of Barbados, St Lucia (both tourism), Havana, Port of Spain (tourism & trade) & Cancún (tourism & possible ex-MEX fuel stop) are more viable future routes in several years’ time.
