There have been two ‘massive’ explosions in Ataturk Airport, gunfire has also been reported. Also reported are several casulties – this is an ongoing incident and police are attempting to neutralise the situation.

Doesn’t look good. Hope all injures recover, but I do fear the worst. Stay safe if you’re in Istanbul. If I were you I wouldn’t step foot in Istanbul. Stay safe.

Indeed, as I had posted about 30 mins previously 😉

All over CNN now. 10 confirmed dead so far.

Seems that those flights which have landed have passengers being held on the aircraft and those not landed are being diverted.

Sadly the death toll is rising, and sadly I’m no longer shocked, just saddened and resigned to acceptance.

I had a near miss in transit last evening on my way home to Cyprus.

We had pushed back from 204 to taxi to 35R, engines were starting when there was what looked like a lightening flash from within the terminal. There are often storms in the evenings at this time of year so didn’t think too much of it.

Not long after take off there was a ‘crew conference’ in the front galley and a notably subdued mood among them afterwards though as you would expect they remained totally professional, only after landing did the captain tell us what had happened. There were some tears among the crew and passengers – no one knew enough to know whether colleagues or family or friends had been injured or worse.

Normally that flight would go back about an hour later but when I left the terminal it was subject to indefinite delay so of course the crew were left in limbo not knowing much about colleagues and friends.

My sympathy to all those affected. It was another terrible day for aviation and Turkey.

FWIW IST seems to be operating with very few delays today, I had an advisory from TK saying business as normal. If by any chance you are leaving IST or indeed any Turkish airport in the coming weeks I think you could expect the screening before terminal entry to be stepped up significantly with resulting delays.

Tragic and my sympathies go to all who have been affected. They are saying it was an ISIS attack which proves if ISIS can do this in the month of Ramadan, their cause has nothing to do with religion at all!

TK are asking people to arrive at either Istanbul airport not less than three hours before departure time until further notice.
