Hello all, I have been an avid reader of this forum for a couple of years now and thought it was a good time to add a topic which has mystified me for a while. I often see aircrews in airports, preparing for their work flight and often pulling along enormous amounts of luggage. I have noted in particular, some crews from SIA and MAS each pulling behind them what I would use a) for a weekend trip; along with b) what I would use for a week away. One would expect aircrew to be experts at minimal packing for their travel duties, and an A380-sized crew means a lot of baggage. So, how long are their stopovers and/or what are they carrying in this excessively large luggage?

Depends on airline and routing. For example Swiss crew at JNB get 2 days/1night. ie. arrive monday morning and leave again Tuesday evening. BA on the other hand get 2 nights. Then there are trips where they have stopovers, eg on the way to Oz, or ANZ to Europe via LAX, so may be away for a whole week or more.

Or some may just be stocking up on cheap shopping to flog at home so need extra baggage to carry it all.

    Hard to say really.

Trolleys and suitcases are issued by the airline. The crew have to use them no matter what they pack.
Quite hard to judge the content and weight.

…and on some flights the crew seem to deem it necessary to use bins near the front of the cabin for all their own baggage! Doesn’t happen with all airlines though.

Many Crew also take their own pillow and duvet, when they have a layover, it make it easier to sleep when the bed feels like home.

Also some crew get called from stand-by, where they need to have packed for every climate eventuality (hot, cold, wet, dry) and duration from 1 night to 10.

Sometimes they don’t operate a A-B-A, they do an A-B-C-D-A tour. I’m commenting in general and not in the context of airlines mentioned in the OP.
