Tried and tested: Thule Gauntlet Sleeve for Macbook Air

21 Dec 2011 by Jenny Southan

An Apple exclusive until January 2012, the envelope-style Gauntlet Sleeve makes a sturdy accessory for both 11- and 13-inch Macbook Airs. The new product from Swedish company Thule (thule.com), looks industrial and masculine in semi-ridged black moulded rubber (or strictly speaking, EVA foam), and reminded me of an accessory a construction worker might have.

The bright turquoise Nylex interior provides a snug surround for the machine, while the exterior guards against water, knocks and scratches. What’s more, as opposed to an expensive leather product, you won’t be worried about damaging the sleeve itself – making it a good option for travelling. However, there is no shoulder strap so you will either have to carry it under your arm or slot it into your hand luggage.

Another plus is that the Gauntlet is quick and easy to open and close (essential for airport security) thanks to a Velcro seal, and there is separate divide for a few slim documents. At 150g, it doesn’t add much to the weight of your Air either, and comes with a 25-year warranty.

PROS Excellent protection, good value for money.

CONS Macho looks will not appeal to all travellers.

PRICE £39.95
