While most people flock to Macau for its buzzing nightlife and energy-filled casinos, it’s sometimes nice to take a break from it all and enjoy an exquisite meal in a discreet setting, far-removed from the madding crowds. A case in point is the Mandarin Oriental Macau’s exquisite Vida Rica bar and restaurant. The contemporary-chic setting of the bar is complemented by its crystal and chrome elements, and, of course, sweeping views of the glitzy Macau skyline. The cocktail bar does, of course, dispense a massive range of innovative cocktails, but we dined at the adjoining restaurant. The restaurant describes its fare as an interpretation of classic cuisine with a modern twist. We tried some classic favourites like pan-fried foie gras with port wine and cherries, along with a smoked duck breast with beetroot gorgonzola, walnut and cranberries. For mains, I tried the restaurant signature — traditional cataplana with Boston lobster, scallops, clams, fish served in an aromatic crustacean broth infused with Portuguese white wine.

Verdict: A great restaurant to experience Macau’s “east meets west” identity, in a marvellously luxurious setting.
