A unique dining concept making waves in the Mumbai food scene is Thangabali, the south Indian premium restaurant with three branches across Mumbai. I recently dined at the very busy Bandra Pali Hill outlet. The decor of this restaurant features temple pillars, Kathakali masks, copper utensils and the works, giving diners a taste of south Indian fare.

As we waited, we chomped on freshly fried poppadums, banana chips and bowls of spicy south Indian rasam. A hefty portion of mutton stew followed, served with appams fresh off the pan. We also tried Kerala-style prawns, spicy but not overwhelming, chicken with Andhra spices and Bombay ducks.

We then ordered some Kerala paratha, accompanied by ghee roast chicken and some traditional fish curry. All this was washed down by some sol kadi, perfect to balance the spices.

All the dishes were spiced to perfection, without being overwhelming. Spice tolerance levels were ascertained at the time of the order, which is a nice touch, especially if you are entertaining international guests.

Verdict: A unique place to take colleagues for a team-building dinner.
