Restaurant check: My Humble House New Delhi

1 Dec 2007 by business traveller

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: Walking into ITC Maurya’s My Humble House (the New Delhi outpost of the much-lauded Singapore restaurant), you’re immediately struck by the modern design, minimalist, yet comfortable and inviting atmosphere, and the “chinois” detailing that make the restaurant a one-of-a-kind in Delhi. Japanese designer Yano Kanmei was commissioned to turn the rooftop space into a beautiful nouveau Chinese restaurant, complete with a bar, indoor and outdoor dining areas – the latter of which sits atop water as if you are floating above the city – two immaculate private dining rooms with modern, French chandeliers, and an outdoor lounge area.

Inside dining consists of centre tables with a world-class view through floor-to-ceiling windows, or more secluded tables behind wooden slats that create an air of privacy, and should you desire, romance. Here, or on the terrace, the view of the nature reserve across the street and the twinkling lights beyond take you far away from the noise and traffic of the city. And that’s before you’ve even ordered.

THE FOOD: The modern Chinese fare is a mix of traditional flavours and new preparations. While each course was excellent, the starters still stand out in my mind: a black pepper mud crab claw with just enough pepper to pop, but without overwhelming the dish; and a philo-wrapped pumpkin mouse that melts in your mouth. The chef can accommodate vegetarian and meat-friendly requests, and the menu itself boasts flavours ranging from sweet to spicy, to simple and fresh.

DRINKS: One of the few restaurants in Delhi to keep both their white and red wine varietals in a temperature-controlled wine room, it stocks a range of international selections, though very few are by-the-glass. And, as India is home to a large population of non-drinkers, an array of non-alcoholic beverages is available.

SERVICE: Attentive, timely service from well-informed waiters who are happy to answer any questions about the menu.

PRICE: Exceptionally well-priced, especially for the quality of the food: appetisers from US$11; mains from US$9 to US$12.70; a wide selection of wines starting at around US$89.

VERDICT: If you have time and an appetite for a non-Indian option while in Delhi, My Humble House should be at the top of your list.
