BACKGROUND Armani/Aqua is one of Hong Kong-based Aqua Group’s flagship restaurants. This is only the second restaurant worldwide to have collaborated with the Italian design house.
THE RESTAURANT This venue is located – aptly – within a veritable emporium of Armani shops inside Chater House in Central. Once there, you are greeted by glamorous staff and led through sleek, black sliding doors into an imposing entrance hall, its red carpet lined with oversized aromatic candles. This dramatic “secret society” feel continues inside the restaurant, which has a black, red and gold colour scheme and plush, Oriental furnishings.
THE FOOD We sampled a taster menu of the Aqua brand’s dual culinary specialities: Italian and Japanese. The sushi platter was positively delectable – handcrafted at the open-plan sushi bar in the corner of the venue. The fatty tuna was so tender it melted in your mouth, and the yellowtail and apple salsa sushi was a taste sensation. The main –Wagyu tenderloin, soy and shiitake mushroom (HK428/US$55) – was succulent, and the accompanying mash was delightfully creamy. Select a bottle of the Benuara, Nero D’Avola, 2007, Cusumano (HK$500/US$65) with this dish for a well-rounded experience. My companion polished the bitter chocolate, lychee and sesame dessert (HK$110/US$14) off her plate to the last crumb, waxing lyrical over the exceptional balance of flavours.
THE BAR The suave, backlit cocktail bar in the centre as you enter the restaurant is perfect for an after-dinner cocktail. Another option is the neighbouring Armani/Privé bar, which has a huge outdoor terrace.
VERDICT The perfect atmosphere in which to impress clients, with rich, indulgent dishes and décor to match.
