Background
Tumi’s Alpha 3 Collection follows the brand’s Alpha 2 Collection. Updates include an integrated USB power port added to each of the carry-on sizes, dual-access entry, a “modernised” front face with protective rails, a full access front pocket for increased functionality and dual-coil security zippers.
From this Collection, I decided to put the Alpha 3 International Dual Access 4 Wheel Carry-On through its paces.
Style
Nothing particularly extravagant here. It’s sleek, elegant and appropriately low-key for a business traveller. Those looking to make a statement may opt for the more flamboyant “Graphic Congo Print”.
Quality
Robust. The whole bag feels sturdily put together. The handle is made from “aircraft-grade aluminium”, which apparently makes it “extremely lightweight and sturdy”. I couldn’t disagree. If you buy (separately for HK$4,790/US$611) the Tumi Brief Pack backpack, also from the Alpha 3 collection, this slips perfectly onto the handle and makes it easy to carry both items together.
Interior
There are plenty of storage pockets, including two elongated pencil case-sized pockets and two mesh-coated pockets, one bigger and one smaller. Two mesh-coated flaps can be fastened together using a plastic buckle to keep your belongings in place.
Technology
It’s worth noting that an integrated USB port is included so you can charge your phone by plugging it into the bag. You need to use your own powerbank, though.
Security
The luggage has an easy-to-use TSA-approved three-digit combination lock. It also comes equipped with a luggage tag on which you can write down your personal details.
Verdict
A solid all-round carry-on that is well put together and has plenty of compartmentalised storage space.
