Residence Inn by Marriott Amsterdam Houthavens

BACKGROUND

Opened in January 2018 and managed by Cycas Hospitality, this all-suite property is contained within a double-decker building also housing Marriott’s lifestyle brand Moxy, and its modern décor perfectly fits into Amsterdam’s cooler-than-cool vibe.

WHAT’S IT LIKE?

The first few floors of the property are occupied by the Moxy hotel, which features a communal lobby with a lively lounge and bar, as well as seven meeting rooms with the largest able to host up to 56 people, underground parking.

The upper floors play host to the Residence Inn, which offers 60 studio and one-bedroom suites. Guests staying in the apartments are also welcome to use the Moxy’s lounge and meeting rooms.

WHERE IS IT?

Located in the up-and-coming business district of Houthavens – Amsterdam’s main port – the hotel is a 20-minute bus ride from the city centre. The area is one of the city’s newest hot spots, particularly in the fashion industry; the property is surrounded by the offices of companies such as Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein, among others.

ROOMS

The Residence Inn apartments range from studios, measuring 28 sqm, to one-bedroom suites with a total of 40 sqm. All rooms are air conditioned and are fitted with fully-equipped kitchens including Nespresso coffee machines. There is also free wifi throughout the property.

All 120 rooms in the Moxy are 19 sqm, but those on the upper floors offer better views of the harbour.

I stayed in a one-bedroom apartment on the corner of the building. A bank of floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room gave me a great view of the harbour, meaning I could watch containers being loaded onto one of the biggest ships I’ve ever seen. Black-out curtains ensured I had complete privacy in the evenings and no sunlight peaking in to wake me up first thing in the morning.

The kitchen came with everything I could possibly need for cooking my own meals, from pots and pans to plates and glasses, alongside an oven, hob, microwave and a dishwasher for cleaning up after.

The bedroom offered a wardrobe and chest of drawers with plenty of storage and a second TV (in addition to the one in the separate living room) with access to movie channels.

Unlike most of my hotel stays, I did not find it difficult to get to sleep thanks to the very comfortable king-size bed.

FOOD AND DRINK

Each morning, a complimentary hot breakfast is served on the top-floor lounge and terrace of the Residence Inn, where you’ll find stunning views of the harbour and the river IJ. Moxy guests can get breakfast downstairs from €12.

MEETINGS

Moxy’s seven meeting rooms are super cool and the property offers a range of options for groups; think popcorn machines, gourmet snacks, lunch and cocktails, whiteboard and blackboard walls and even beanbag seats. Each room offers natural daylight through floor-to-ceiling windows, limiting the chances of an afternoon slump.

LEISURE

The property features a gym and a swimming pool (look out for the stunning manta ray sculptures floating in the foyer in the middle of the building, which you can see from the pool).

VERDICT

Staying in the Residence Inn made me feel like a high-flying socialite living in a swish Amsterdam apartment. What’s not to love?
