Hotel review: Pullman Bangkok King Power

Pullman Bangkok King Power

BACKGROUND

Pullman Bangkok King Power was the first Pullman-branded hotel when it opened in 2007. In April 2016 the property began a major renovation project that was completed in June this year. The facelift included the total refurbishment of guestrooms and restaurants, and also saw the introduction of a new spa facility and ballroom.

WHERE IS IT?

Located on Rangnam Road, next to the King Power duty-free complex. The hotel offers easy access to the Victory Monument BTS Station (a seven-minute walk or complimentary tuk tuk service). It’s a 30-minute drive from Don Mueang Airport or 40 minutes from Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Alternatively, the Airport Rail Link takes 30 minutes from Suvarnabhumi to nearby Phayathai Station.

WHAT’S IT LIKE?

The large, bustling lobby is called “the Junction”, and is divided into a welcome zone, sitting area and F&B section. Featuring a cool mix of colourful chairs, sofas and tables, it’s far more enticing than most lobby lounges – as proven by the many people using it to relax, eat and have casual meetings.

ROOM FACILITIES

Guestrooms are split between the Glass Tower and Garden Wing. I stayed in a brand-new Deluxe with Balcony room category. The view from the balcony overlooks the hotel’s lush gardens, however there is no partition between balconies meaning little privacy if you choose to sit in the outdoor area to
enjoy the scenery.

A workspace is available under the TV, and equipped with international sockets, but it was lacking a chair. I manhandled the large armchair by the window into the space, which worked, though was not the best setup and caused a blockage in the room.

The King Bed was soft and, combined with blackout curtains and soundproofing, I enjoyed a very comfortable sleep. Thoughtful design details impressed me too, such as the bedside table with a raised lip edge to prevent accidents.

While the room is a fairly standard size (36 sqm) the bathroom felt spacious, with an option to slide open the partition for views into the garden. Amenities from CO Bigelow are provided.

CLUB LOUNGE

Guests staying in an executive room or suite category are afforded access to the club lounge on the 20th floor. It’s a bright, attractive space, thanks in part to floor-to-ceiling windows. Facilities include a library, boardroom and secretarial services. Breakfast (6am-11.30am) offers a wide buffet selection as well as live cooking stations and an à la carte menu. Evening cocktails and canapés last from 5-7pm.

RESTAURANTS AND BARS

There are five restaurants and bars. Cuisine Unplugged is an all-day dining restaurant, with a focus on using produce grown at local farms. The Junction in the lobby serves tea and snacks in the day, transforming into a cool pop-up bar in the evening. The Glen Bar, on the same floor, offers a dinner service with live performances every evening alongside signature Thai cocktails. The Wine Pub offers an extensive drinks menu and a French menu, while the Pool Bar serves refreshments, cocktails and snacks.

Pullman Bangkok King Power Show Kitchen at Eternity Ballroom

MEETING FACILITIES

The new Eternity Ballroom is next to the lobby, offering 470 sqm of space for 500 guests, plus a 110 sqm pre-function area that includes an interactive kitchen area. There’s also the larger 790 sqm Infinity Ballroom, 20 meeting rooms on levels 2 and 6 of the Glass Tower, and the 600-seat Aksra Theatre.

LEISURE FACILITIES

The 27-metre outdoor pool and gym are both located on level 4. A highlight is the newly designed spa. Eight private rooms offer services ranging from traditional Thai massage to LPG cellulite-busting treatments. I thoroughly enjoyed the Moroccan Hammam ritual (THB3,500/US$106), where I received a full body scrub in a cool, marble room.

VERDICT

Given a new lease of life and a cool new attitude thanks to its extensive renovation, this looks set to be among the city’s most popular hotels for the foreseeable future. The wide range of facilities are impressive, with drinking, dining, leisure and event offerings galore.

PRICE Internet rates for a midweek stay in a Deluxe with Balcony room in December start from US$171 including breakfast and tax
