Background

Nestled in the UNESCO-protected Tramuntana Mountains, the hotel’s charming rooms, suites and villas are spread across two manor houses dating back to the 16th and 17th-century.

What’s it like

Stone walls, terracotta tiles, typically Mallorcan green shutters and a smattering of bright flowers characterise this breathtaking property.

Where is it

In the little village of Deià — home to famed writers, painters, poets and musicians — with a staggering view of the mountains as well as the sea. It is only 40 minutes from Palma de Mallorca Airport.

Rooms

With 73 rooms, suites and villas spanning across various categories, the hotel covers every kind of requirement for solo and couple travellers as well as larger families. The décor largely relies on rustic white walls, traditional furniture, local artwork and Mallorcan antiques. There is a Presidential suite, and even a villa. The highlight is the newly-opened Matthew Williamson suite, which is a one bedroom villa with a private terrace and swimming pool. Additionally, the decor features ostrich feather lamps, Indian painted cabinets, peacock chairs and wallpaper designed by Williamson.

Food and Drink

Chef Guillermo Mendez’s master  expertise is best seen at the romantic El Olivo restaurant – arguably one of the best in all of Mallorca and set amidst olive groves older than the hotel’s buildings. Coincidentally, the oil yielded by them is served throughout the hotel’s restaurants, used at the spa and is even bottled and sold. Try the fish soup scented with almonds and olive oil or the roast suckling pig with sobrasada sausage. The more casual Café Miró serves tapas and fresh mountain cheese in a space done up with 33 works by the Spanish artist after which it is named. Buffet breakfast is served at Son Fony, where Iberian hams, homemade preserves and local breads are sure to catch your fancy. The Pool Restaurant is also a great spot for a chilled gazpacho or cocktail in the summer.

Meetings

Guests can choose from a variety of meeting venues such as Albeniz, which comes with an expansive terrace, accommodating up to 80 people and Son Fony venue featuring a glass rooftop and ES Teix perfect for smaller gatherings.

Leisure

La Residencia doesn’t stop at the facilities – two outdoor pools, an indoor one, tennis courts and a spa. In-house, one can sign up for cookery, pottery, painting and sculpting lessons, while there are donkey trails and other activities for kids. First light walks can be set up with or without a guide, and the hotel will give you Leica binoculars to take in the staggering surroundings. In the summer months, a shuttle bus takes guests to and from Cala Deià to enjoy the beach. Complimentary two-hour boat rides are also offered. To encourage exploration of the island, the hotel rents out bicycles as well as Vespas.

Verdict: A property that is steeped in luxury without trying too hard, the Belmond La Residencia can be a base for an active holiday as well as for a relaxing staycation.
