Hotel check: The Fleming

20 Feb 2007 by Tom Otley
What's it like? New boutique hotel with many attractive design elements: modern sculpture in the lobby, floor-to-ceiling windows and a minimalist look warmed with bright colours and a riot of flower arrangements (pale white orchids, bright yellow mini orchids and a fiddle leaf fig tree). The staff are excellent, helpfully providing maps, writing down directions for taxi drivers and hailing the taxi, and quick to respond to any difficulties. Open since October 2006, The Fleming has targeted business travellers and female travellers (there is a female-only floor). Where is it? In Wan Chai, easily reached from the MTR station and a short walk from the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Hong Kong International Airport is 40 minutes' drive, and the Airport Express Central Station is only 15 minutes' drive. how many rooms? Spread over 12 of the 14 floors, the 66 rooms come in four categories: standard (21 sqm), Superior (25 sqm), Deluxe (30 sqm) and Executive suites (36 sqm). Room facilities All have wireless and wired internet (512K, HK$120/£7.80 for 24 hours), IDD and local calls, complimentary daily newspaper (The Standard), 24-hour concierge service, voicemail, express check-in and check-out, a huge plasma/LCD television with full cable access and a good choice of British channels, in-room safe (although not large enough to fit a standard-sized laptop), air conditioning and climate control, hairdryer, goose-down duvets and luxury linen – cordless phones are also promised. Deluxe and Executive rooms have a kitchenette with appliances (including fridge and microwave), DVD home theatre unit, iron and ironing board, as well as coffee and tea-making facilities. Security is good – the elevators are card-operated. Restaurants and bars There is no bar, though one is being planned in one corner of the restaurant, Cubix, which serves international cuisine. Items from the short menu are available both as room service and in the restaurant: for example, the Fleming sandwich, a combination of ham, egg, bacon, smoked chicken, tomatoes and lettuce (HK$98/£6.40), or pan fried cod fillet with seasonal vegetables served with teriyaki sauce (HK$168/£10.90). Bizarrely, for fire regulation reasons, although you can see the restaurant from the lobby you have to walk outside and come in through another door from the street. Leisure facilities There is no gym, but the hotel has a corporate membership with Californian Fitness, a four-level club one block away. There is no spa, but the staff recommend local options. One fellow traveller highly praised their choice of reflexologist on a neighbouring street, where she had nearly two hours' treatment for £22. There are also yoga mats in the executive rooms; for other rooms they are available on request. Business and meeting facilities A good business centre on the first floor, as well as a boardroom meeting room for 12 and a second one planned. Verdict An interesting option in a great location, convenient for connections throughout Central and beyond, and at a good price. Staff are friendly and helpful. Prices Fully flexible internet rates for a midweek stay in early March started from HK$1,102 (£72) for a Superior room.
